reasons to eat
1. Buying locally builds trust and is safer for our families. When you choose to buy locally, you build a relationship with the people who produce your food.
2. Locally grown food tastes better. Many local farmers choose varieties based on taste, rather than durability.
3. Locally grown food is fresher. Food that is allowed to ripen naturally is tastier.
5. Small farms are better for the environment. Small farms are better able to respond to environmental threats through crop rotation, soil preservation efforts, and crop diversification. Small farmers have a direct relationship with the land, often passed down
through generations.
8. Locally grown food reflects the real cost of food. As consumers, we must be aware of long-term costs as much as short-term prices.
4. Buying locally supports endangered family farms. When you buy local food, you vote with your food dollars.
6. Buying locally strengthens the local economy. The money you spend stays in the community.
7. Eating locally supports biodiversity. The crop variety available from local sources is far greater than that of major suppliers. In addition to a richer eating experience, biodiversity also protects against crop failures and blights.
9. Buying locally is fun and easy! Get to know your local producers, farmers markets, and the friendly folks at your local co-op!
10. Eating seasonally puts us in touch with the natural world. By choosing locally grown foods, we become aware of what is available seasonally—and naturally tastier.
