Planting
Ahoop house was installed at the Washburn Community Garden in the fall of 2012, thanks to a generous donation by Mayo Clinic Health System—
Franciscan Healthcare. Hillview maintains the hoop house and coordinates volunteer involvement, including students from Coulee Montessori and La Crosse Design Institute, who help with the planting, weeding and harvesting. WisCorps workers have also provided assistance as well as UW–La Crosse stu- dents as part of their internship program.
Harvested produce from the hoop house is do- nated to the Salvation Army, Gerrard Hall, Siena Hall
Halfway House and A Place of Grace. Hillview also built and installed some of the raised beds for senior citizens at the Washburn Community Garden.
Hillview is excited to be involved in La Crosse’s Neighborhood Revitalization project by helping to expand gardening in the Washburn Neighborhood. Support for Hillview’s gardening project comes from the City of La Crosse and HUD’s Community Devel- opment Block Grant program.
Coulee Montessori students planted seeds in the early spring, assisted by Karlena Brailey, Hillview’s Community Garden Coordinator. The students participated at various times during the growing season, including harvesting the produce and delivering it to A Place of Grace. “Deliveries of produce to A Place of Grace were meaningful experiences each time,” says Nine Dodge, Coulee Montessori Teacher.
