Shana and Ayianna Johnson enjoyed the Market Baskets chili tasting during the “World Hunger Day” event at YMCA North Branch put on by Pioneering Healthier Communities.
A Market Baskets class was held at Savory Creations, where Chef Shawn McManus instructed soon-to-be 18-year-olds transitioning out of the foster care program on basic knife skills and how to prepare vegetarian chili using a slow cooker. RSVP volunteers provided assistance, including Mary Ann Snapp (far left). Also shown, Rebecca La Force (left), La Crosse County Independent Living Resource Coordinator.

HILLVIEW’S MARKET BASKETS PROGRAM participated in five “Multi- cultural Family Nights” at the Boys & Girls Club Mathy Center, providing meals prepared with a slow cooker to families and offering a chance to win a slow cooker along with recipes and Market Baskets bags with the ingredients to make the meal featured that night. Other educational ac- tivities included a cooking demo, making applesauce, and learning basic knife skills as well as food games (i.e. Name that Bean). Fruit smoothies (using kale as the secret ingredient!) were also provided and became a favorite treat for the children.
