WHY I SUPPORT HILLVIEW
CONTRIBUTING SPONSORS:
THE LA CROSSE PUBLIC LIBRARY
strives to serve the public in a number of ways—circulating popular materials, reference services, research assistance, programs for all ages, and provid- ing a safe and comfortable public space for all. The Archives Depart- ment provides access to research material unique to La Crosse,
and in this way we were able to contribute to the content of this book. The Hillview Urban Agricul- ture Center is a vital organization in the city of La Crosse, and its history runs deep. The creation
of this book was the impetus for us in the Archives to write a new chapter in the history of the city of La Crosse and the history of urban agriculture and local food systems in the greater La Crosse area. This is an area that the La Crosse Public Library as a whole has taken a keen interest in. In 2013, La Crosse Public Library launched the first seed library
in Wisconsin. The Seed Library happened because the La Crosse community, with its diverse local food and sustainability initiatives, was a perfect fit for such a project. The Hillview Urban Agriculture Center was one of the partners who brought people, ideas and support to the birth of the Seed Library, and we look forward to working closely with these neigh- bors in years to come. We at the La Crosse Public Library hope you enjoy the “fruits” of our research!

IT’S A FACT THAT CHILDREN WHO
help prepare meals eat a broader variety of healthy foods. Imagine what might happen if we can teach them to grow their own food? Mayo Clinic Health System—Franciscan Healthcare collaborates with Hill- view Urban Agriculture Center and others to provide community well- ness programs focused on nutrition, physical activity and sustainability. By helping to model sustainability practices and healthy lifestyles, Franciscan Healthcare encourages respect for our own well-being and the health of our environment.

WESTERN TECHNICAL COLLEGE
first started working with Hill- view six years ago when we rented space for our Landscape Horticulture program classes. As we considered building a new greenhouse on our main campus, we knew that we would want to continue to work with the people at Hillview, who are so passionate about sustainability. They under- stand our vision for the future and share our commitment to create a movement toward a more resil- ient community. Sustainability is bigger than any one organization, and while individual, organiza- tional decision-making is neces- sary, more can be accomplished by working together. Western
is proud to be a partner in this important endeavor. The future is exciting, indeed!
