III. DELIVERING THE MESSAGE 1. Thread/Theme
Select a thread that pulls your whole pitch together. This thread is the overarching message you are trying to convey in your presentation.
Possible threads:
Building community – Creating a caring community around a Jewish institution.
Jewish continuity – Ensuring the continued vitality of the Jewish people.
Excellence in education – Creating
an ideal environment for a student’s intellectual growth, Jewish identity and academic achievement.
Jewish values – Reinforcing Jewish values learned at home; passing a Jewish tradition on to the next generation (dor l’dor); providing a meaningful moral education.
Jewish identity – Fostering a strong and healthy Jewish identity.
Jewish leadership – Developing the next generation of future Jewish leaders and educators.
Teaching citizenship – Incorporating Jewish ethics into a child’s daily
life (i.e.: global and communal civic responsibility, environmental awareness and appreciation, and the meaning of personal integrity).
Jewish pluralism – Microcosm for creating a pluralistic Jewish world.
Language from Mission Statement Phrases from brochures or website
*The thread may be anything that appeals to you – from a slogan to a Jewish quote. As long as it speaks to you, you will have the passion to make it compelling to others.
2. Acknowledge the Opposition
It is important to recognize the opposition and possible constraints. This shows that
you are educated about the issues in the community and understand the complications related to your case. This also allows you to connect with your audience and empathize with their position. You need to weigh the risks of your approach against the realities of the system in which it has to work.
This is about recognizing the challenges within the larger context.
What events are taking place in society
at large which may affect the tactics and effectiveness of your advocacy efforts? (Overseas/Israel crises, current events in the news, a major capital campaign for the local synagogue, etc.)
These are turbulent times, and it takes a Federation campaign that can both sustain and maintain a level of service to those least able to take care of themselves locally and globally, as well as plan for the future. One
gift does so much. A gift to a Federation campaign is a “force multiplier” for making a difference and having a real impact on people.
