When we’re in NOLA, we have to go to the North Shore A LOT. That’s because Huppy’s folks live there. There are two very long bridges here. One, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which goes from Metairie to Mandeville, takes about 30 minutes to drive over and the other one is the Twin Span which takes about 10 minutes. BOTH bridges would make my nervous aunt hum a John Phillip Sousa song. To get to his folks’ house, we usually take the Twin Span. Yesterday, we did it a little different.
Some awesome NOLA graffiti
NOLA is Time Consuming
Here I had hoped that NOLA would’ve been a lot more fun than it has been. It’s not that it’s not a fun town, but since it’s closer to home than I’ve been in a few months, real life has been rearing it’s ugly head; worrying about travel, work, finances, getting teen Huppy back to school (he’s a Junior this year!), Huppy finishing up his manuscript and preparing for a talk, it’s all been, {sigh} a little too mundane.
I was so hopeful our first night back.
One thing about San Cris I forgot to post
And it’s about Tamales.
Cancuuuuuuun
It is somehow fitting that we ended our trip in Cancun. It was like a slap in the face. And here’s why:
A bus to Mérida
We got to the bus station in San Cris during a torrential downpour. We had to walk down Insurgentes and the farther down we got, the deeper the water got. It had been raining all day. Seriously. It barely stopped. And apparently, the drainage in the city can’t handle it.
We’re in Mérida
and are heading to Cancun today. I won’t even talk about the 14 hour bus ride here… until I can do it justice, of course.
Actually went to the beach yesterday and drank a Piña Colada. See? We do normal stuff too.
And so we depart San Cristóbal
Which, honestly, I don’t want to do. It’s truly wonderful here.
Behold….
A church on a hill
There’s a street here called Guadalupe Andador. That’s the street with all the bars and restaurants and where you usually can find expats hanging out at the wine bar called La Viña de Bacco. Great bar. They give you tapas with every every order, and a glass of their house red costs $18 pesos! If we go there, we end up staying too long and eating far too much tapas and drinking far, far too much wine. There’s been a few nights where we were there so long, we forgot about dinner altogether. (It is also the scene of my one night of gastrointestinal horror… not due to their tapas, but due to a waitress giving us a free shot of tequila as we walked out the door. BIG mistake on my part.)
